Start a disability ministry

Learn how you can develop a disability ministry in your congregation and enable people with developmental disabilities to grow in their faith.

Acting as the spiritual shepherds of Bethesda’s mission, Bethesda’s ministry consultants build places of belonging for people of all abilities. Congregations are more than just a place of worship. They are an important place for the people we support to connect with others. We work closely with Christian congregations across the country, helping them welcome and accommodate people with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they are involved in all aspects of worship, fellowship, community events, groups and activities.

Many congregations can adapt the process they use to welcome new members, guests and visitors to welcoming people with developmental disabilities. At Bethesda, we help congregations achieve the following:

  • People of all abilities worship as one congregation.
  • People of all abilities participate in age-appropriate groups and activities.
  • Every member of the congregation uses their God-given talents.
  • Members of the congregation attend and/or assist in activities that grow their faith life.

Ultimately, we have a vision of true diversity in the church—we are many parts in the one Body of Christ. We believe the whole Body of Christ exists where all people are involved to the extent they desire, and are embraced as full partners in congregational life.
